PSA: I found a weird way to get a real feel for a neighborhood before buying
We were looking at a house in Bonnie Doon last month and the listing photos made the street look super quiet, so I went and sat in my truck outside the place at 7pm on a Tuesday to just watch. Turns out the neighbor two doors down has a garage band that practices loudly every weeknight, which we never would have known from a daytime viewing. Anyone else have a strange but useful trick for scoping out a place?

That's actually a really smart move, wish I'd thought of it before we bought our place. My version of research was just checking if the nearest pizza place delivered here, which is not the same level of due diligence. Did you try talking to any of the neighbors while you were parked out there, or was it strictly a spy mission?

Strictly a spy mission" is the only way to do it right. Talking to people puts them on their best behavior and you get fake answers. You have to see the normal, boring truth.
