That agent I trusted talked me into an overpriced home inspection package

Honestly, I used to just go with whatever home inspector my real estate agent recommended in Edmonton without question. Last year when I bought a house in the Beverley area, I paid $650 for a fancy inspection package that included thermal imaging and mold testing. A neighbor who used to work in construction walked through my new place and found three obvious issues the inspector completely missed. Now I hire my own inspector separately from my agent, and I get referrals from friends who actually used them before. The kicker is that my agent made about $900 in referral fees just for sending me to that guy. Has anyone else found that agents push certain inspectors or lenders just for kickbacks around here?

$900 in referral fees for that guy just for sending you his way. That's a hell of a lot more than I thought agents were pocketing on these deals. I bet that inspector knew exactly what he was doing too, missing stuff so he'd keep getting sent business. You're smart to go with word of mouth now, that's the only way to find someone who actually cares about the job. Agents will act like they're helping you but they're really just lining their own pockets. Don't trust anyone who makes money off the sale to also pick the person inspecting the house.

Right? "$900 in referral fees" is wild, that's basically a whole month of my car insurance just for pointing at someone. It's a racket honestly, agents acting like they're doing you a favor but they're just farming out the work to whoever pays them back. I'd be willing to bet that inspector missed stuff on purpose, no way you're that bad at your job by accident. Word of mouth is the way to go, at least then if the guy screws up you know who to yell at. Good luck finding someone who actually cares, it's like looking for a honest mechanic these days.
