After 3 months of trying both, I found that a $15 hot air station from the flea market works better for phone screen repairs than my old $80 heat gun.

The smaller nozzle gives me way more control over the heat, so I haven't cracked a single LCD since I switched, has anyone else had a similar experience with a specific tool upgrade?

Honestly, that's just how it goes with cheap tools sometimes.

My buddy had the same thing happen with a cheap soldering iron from a garage sale. He does little board fixes for fun and swore his fancy adjustable one was the best. He tried the old five dollar one on a whim and said the tiny tip let him fix a busted game cartridge connector his good iron just melted. It's like what dakota379 said, the cheap stuff just clicks sometimes for a specific job. Makes you wonder how much we overthink our tool choices. Have you found other jobs where the simple tool wins?
