I finally figured out why that old VCR kept eating tapes

I was working on a Panasonic PV-4022 for a customer in Omaha, and it would just chew up every tape after about 30 seconds of play. I spent an hour checking belts and rollers before I noticed the tiny plastic idler arm was cracked, so it wasn't applying enough tension. Replaced that 2-cent part and it ran perfectly. Has anyone else had a simple, cheap part cause a huge headache on old tape decks?

Actually, that idler arm is more like a 50 cent part now.

50 cents now" is still pretty cheap for the fix, but I get what you mean. The real cost is the hour of labor to find the thing. It's wild how a tiny piece of plastic can bring a whole machine to a halt. Makes you wonder how many VCRs got tossed over a two dollar part.
