I finally looked up why some old TVs have that high pitched whine
I was fixing a 1980s CRT for a friend and that sound was driving me nuts, so I googled it. Turns out it's the flyback transformer running at 15,734 Hz, which is right at the edge of what some people can hear! I found that on a really old electronics repair forum from 2003. Has anyone else ever had a customer complain about that specific noise?

That sound is a dead giveaway for a CRT. I used to point it out to customers who thought their set was broken. Most people over 40 can't hear it at all.

Wild how that sound became a hearing test for a whole generation. Bet some younger repair techs used it to find hidden cameras with old CRT monitors too.
