My uncle swore a hairdryer was fine for board-level rework, but my boss insisted on a proper hot air station.

I tried the hairdryer on a cheap DVD player board last week and lifted three pads, which my boss said would happen. So, is a proper station really worth the $150+ for a beginner, or can you get by with cheaper hacks?

That hairdryer story is a perfect example of why the cheap route fails. You need focused heat on a tiny area, not a blast of hot air everywhere. A proper station with temp control and different nozzles is the only way to avoid cooking the board and lifting pads. Spend the money once instead of ruining a bunch of projects.

Wesley83 is right about the focused heat. A hairdryer just blows hot air everywhere and overheats the whole area, which is why those pads lifted. A cheap hot air station lets you control the temperature and use a small nozzle. It's worth the money to not ruin more boards.

Not really though... a hairdryer works fine if you just take your time and keep it moving. I've done dozens of boards with a $20 dryer and never lifted a pad. You just gotta be patient and let the heat soak in gradual like...
