Rant: Why does every repair shop own a $500 soldering station that never gets used

I was in the back of a shop in Austin last week fixing a blown cap on a TV when the owner bragged about his Metcal station collecting dust. Took me 20 minutes just to find the right tip buried in a drawer. How do you justify buying pro gear just to let it sit while you use a Radio Shack iron from 2005?

Ha, guilty as charged - at least the Radio Shack iron part.

That Radio Shack iron is a classic. I still have one in my garage that I can't bring myself to throw away. It just keeps working no matter how much abuse it takes. You can't find that kind of quality in a cheap iron anymore.
