Been using the same trick to check for door zone clearance for years and just found out it's wrong.
I always used a standard 6-inch level to check the gap, but a new guy on my crew in Phoenix pointed out the code spec is actually for a 2-inch sphere. My method was missing some tight spots by a quarter inch. How do you all check your door zones quickly without missing anything?

My buddy in Tucson got tagged on a final for the same thing. He was using a 4-foot level laid flat, thinking if it slid through, he was good. Inspector pulled out that little 2-inch ball gauge and found three doors that failed. He had to recut every one of those jambs.

Honestly, that whole ball gauge thing reminds me of a plumber we used to work with. He would check for level on a vanity by balancing a marble on the countertop. Worked great until a homeowner's kid sent one rolling into a floor vent. Took them hours to find the dang thing, and the noise drove them nuts. Sometimes the old school tricks work a little too well.
