Controller threw a weird error code and I spent 2 hours chasing a ghost in a downtown Chicago highrise

Gonna push back a little on this one. Chasing down error codes is part of the job when you're dealing with complex systems. That controller was trying to tell you something specific, and ignoring it would just make the problem come back later. Two hours sounds bad up front but that's nothing compared to having to go back out there next week. Every weird error code I've spent time digging into taught me something about the system I wouldn't have learned otherwise. Plus in a highrise you want to be sure you actually fixed it not just masked it.

Read an article saying half those error codes point to something else entirely.
