Got asked if I could fix their escalator since I 'work with moving floors'...

I had to explain how elevators and escalators are different. We both ended up laughing about it.

I read that escalators were first called 'moving stairs'... which kinda makes the elevator link clearer.

My friend's kid actually asked about that last week. She was on one at the mall and said, "Look, it's a walking elevator." She's five, so she just put it together in her head. It made total sense to her because they both take you up without using the regular stairs. Adults overcomplicate it with all the technical names. The basic idea is the same, a machine moves you to a different level.

But come on, they both move people between floors, right? Escalators are just elevators that go sideways if you think about it. Why is the link so hard to see?
