TIL a retired mechanic showed me a trick to fix a door sensor with a zip tie
Was working on an Otis elevator in a 12-story building in downtown Phoenix a few years back. Old timer named Jerry walked up, saw me struggling with the door lock sensor, and said 'don't overthink it, kid. Just zip tie the bracket to keep it from vibrating loose.' Saved me an hour of troubleshooting. Anyone else got a simple fix like that from a seasoned guy that stuck with you?

Jumped in to say @skylercooper is totally right but also maybe the real trick is just knowing when to stop fighting the complicated stuff. I mean, Jerry probably learned that after years of watching guys waste time on perfect fixes that didn't matter. For me it was an old elevator guy who showed me that a door sensor's just a magnet and a switch, so if the bracket's loose you can sometimes wedge a folded business card between it and the frame instead of spending an hour aligning it. idk it's like these guys figured out that 90% of the time the simple answer is the right one.
