Had to pick a phone for my cousin in a tricky spot

My cousin is a reporter in Caracas. She needed a new phone for work. The choice was between a normal phone with a locked bootloader or a Pixel with GrapheneOS. The Pixel cost about $200 more. I went with the Pixel. Set it up for her myself. The install took maybe 45 minutes following the guide. She says it feels slower for some apps, but she can send voice notes to sources without that constant fear now. For someone in her position, that trade-off was worth it. Has anyone else had to make a pick like this for someone who isn't super techy? How did you explain the pros and cons?

Focus on the biggest risk they face, like tracking, and keep the setup simple for them.

Most people aren't being tracked in a way that matters.
