My city council rep said 'nothing to hide, nothing to fear' about the new app monitoring proposal.

I used to think that was fine, but after seeing a friend in another country get flagged for a protest group chat, I now encrypt everything. Has anyone else had a real event change their stance on this?

Your friend got flagged just for a group chat? That's terrifying.

Yeah, that "nothing to hide" line is such a weak argument. A buddy of mine got his bank account frozen for a week because an algorithm flagged a totally normal money transfer to his cousin overseas. The bank said it matched a "suspicious pattern" and he had zero way to fight it. He wasn't hiding anything, but he still got treated like a criminal over a computer guess. That stuff changes you.

How's your buddy supposed to pay for stuff now, with an IOU and a handshake? @uma_nelson tell him to start using carrier pigeons for his money transfers, at least the feds can't algorithm that yet. Sounds like he got the full "trust us bro" treatment from the bank while they played detective with his savings. Guess having nothing to hide just means having nothing to access either.
