My cousin in Berlin said 'encryption is for criminals' at a family dinner last year and I still think about it.

My neighbor told me she never uses a password on her home wifi because she has nothing to hide. It's the same kind of thinking. People forget that a lock on your front door isn't an admission of guilt, it's just basic safety. How do you even start to explain that your whole digital life needs protecting? They only see the crime show version where the bad guy uses it.

Right @the_fiona, it's like leaving your car unlocked because you don't have cash in the glove box. The risk isn't about hiding stuff, it's about letting anyone in.

Berlin has some of the strictest data protection laws in the world, so maybe your cousin has a point. If you're not doing anything wrong, why make it harder for police to catch actual criminals who use encryption to hide their plans. A lot of regular people just see it as a tool that helps bad guys more than it helps them.
