Question about a protest in Berlin where I saw cops take a guy's phone for using Signal
I was at a protest in Berlin last month and saw a guy get pulled aside by police who demanded he unlock his Signal app, which got me thinking about whether strong encryption protects free speech or just makes law enforcement's job harder, so what do you all think is the right balance?

Wait, is it even realistic to expect cops to respect digital privacy when they can just grab a phone on a hunch? @taylor82 hit the nail on the head - the chilling effect is real. If having Signal makes you a target, then people will ditch it, and that's exactly what cops want. Strong encryption isn't just about hiding stuff, it's about making sure normal people can talk without being watched. The balance is totally off when a basic privacy app gets you pulled aside at a protest. How do we push back when the rules just get bent against us?

What happens when they decide your banking app is suspicious? That Berlin story is scary because it shows the goalpost can move. The balance is gone if having a normal app makes you a target. Strong encryption isn't a luxury, it's basic now.

Have you thought about how this affects people who aren't even at the protest? If cops can grab a phone for using a certain app, then anyone near a protest with that app is a target... it chills speech before it even happens because people will be scared to have normal tools on them. The balance isn't just about catching bad guys later, it's about letting people gather and talk freely without being treated like suspects for their choice of app. Strong encryption might be the only thing that keeps a protest from being monitored before it starts.
