Talking to my cousin in Hong Kong changed how I see end-to-end encryption

We were just chatting about family stuff, and he mentioned how he uses Signal for everything now, even planning his kid's birthday party. He said, 'If they can't read your texts, they can't make up a reason to knock on your door.' That hit different because he's not a political guy, just a dad trying to keep his family's chats private. It made me realize encryption isn't just for activists, it's for anyone who wants a normal talk without someone listening in. Has anyone else had a simple chat that made the whole privacy fight feel more real?

andrew, you gotta think about who else might be on that group text. I've been burned before where someone's aunt added a cousin I barely know, and suddenly my whole weekend plans got shared with people I never agreed to. That's why I keep my family stuff to Signal specifically, even the boring cake and streamers messages. You don't need someone logging messages or screenshots just because you mentioned a surprise party. The risk isn't paranoia, it's real data trails that stick around way longer than they should.

Seriously? That sounds a bit paranoid for a birthday party chat.

Trust me, it's not paranoia, it's just being smart. I've seen family drama blow up from a simple group text. Keep the birthday wishes to a separate thread and save the real talk for in person.
