That Signal message I almost didn't open changed my whole view on encrypted group chats

I used to think encrypted messaging apps were just for tech nerds or people doing shady stuff lol. Then last month a former coworker from my old job in Austin sent me a Signal invite to a group for laid off employees. I almost ignored it because I figured it was just gonna be spam or gossip. But I opened it and turns out they were using it to share unredacted severance docs and legal advice that would've gotten them in trouble on regular texts. The HR team had been monitoring our old Slack and email chains but they couldn't touch Signal. That group chat saved a few guys like $2,000 each in legal fees by sharing tips from a pro bono lawyer. Now I'm wondering how many other folks in similar situations are missing out because they think encryption is too complicated. Has anyone else found a real world use for encrypted apps that surprised them?

I read somewhere that encrypted chat groups are actually becoming super common in activist circles and community organizing for that exact reason. It's wild how companies can access your messages in regular apps even after you leave, but Signal keeps it locked down. Sounds like that group was a lifesaver, wish more people knew how simple it actually is to use.

Whoa, hold on a second there. I gotta push back on this a little. In my experience, Signal and that type of encrypted chat are only as good as the people using them. I've seen groups fall apart because someone's phone gets lost or they forget their security code or whatever, and then nobody can get back in. Plus, if you're in a really high-stakes situation, like with actual government surveillance, the metadata is still there - who talked to who and when, even if they can't read the messages. So yeah, it's a great tool for your average nosy company or ex-boyfriend, but I wouldn't bet my freedom on it if things got real serious. Your mileage may vary, of course.
