Appreciation post: The time I tried a different rasp on a draft horse
I grabbed a Heller rasptooth file for a big Percheron last week, expecting it to be about the same as my usual one. It cut through the hoof wall so fast I actually had to slow down and adjust my pressure. Anyone else have a go-to tool that surprised them like that?

That "adjust your pressure" part is key.

Adjusting pressure sounds like one of those things that gets overblown. People act like it's some huge secret skill, but it's just part of the job. It's not that deep, you just figure it out as you go. Making it a key point seems like overcomplicating a simple task. Most folks get the hang of it without needing a whole lesson, lol.

Yeah, @tara700 hit the nail on the head with that "adjust your pressure" thing. I had the same shock when I switched to a different brand of rasp on my big Shire a while back. It was like going from a dull butter knife to a sharp chef's knife, the new one just grabbed the hoof wall so much better. I had to back way off and use lighter strokes to keep from taking off too much too fast. It honestly taught me more about technique in one session than months of using my old tool did.
