My anvil stand split right down the middle during a shoeing job yesterday

It was a 50 year old oak block I got from my dad's old shop. Do you guys think I should try to repair it with steel plates or just build a new one from scratch?

Used to be all about just building new myself (I wrecked a perfectly good block trying to fix it once, never again) but @miam11 has me rethinking that. That oak has fifty years of settling in, it's done all its cracking and warping. Slap some heavy plates on there with bolts running clean through and it'll outlast any new piece of lumber (plus you keep your dad's shop alive in your work). New wood might split again in a year, that old block isn't going anywhere. Fix it, you won't regret it.

Why would you even think about replacing it? That oak block has fifty years of your dad's work in it, that's real history. Slap some heavy steel plates on each side with long bolts through the whole thing, it'll be stronger than any new stand. New wood needs to settle and can still split, but that old oak is already done moving. Fixing it honors the tradition and saves you a whole weekend build.
