My mentor insists on oak anvil stands, but I'm leaning toward steel...

He says wood soaks up vibration better, I think metal might hold up longer. Curious how others have chosen.

I mean your mentor's point about wood soaking up vibration is pretty key. I see this all the time where the older, simpler material just works better for the feel of the job. Maybe that's why you see so many beat up wooden workbenches still going strong.

Yeah, the vibration thing is real... I built a steel stand once and it rang like a bell with every hit. Switched to a big block of oak and the difference was huge, way less noise and my hands didn't feel buzzy after a long session. That old wood just eats the shock. Steel might last forever, but the wood makes the work itself better.
