Vent: Saw a horse with a serious crack at the county fair in Boise
The owner said it happened after a trail ride on rocky ground about a week ago. What's your go-to method for stabilizing something like that before you can get a full shoe on it?

A week on a crack like that is WAY too long to wait. Forget just stabilizing for a shoe, that horse needs X-rays YESTERDAY. A deep crack on rocky ground could mean a serious hoof bruise or even the start of a founder. My go-to would be a vet visit first, then maybe a pour-in pad to protect the sole while you figure out the real damage.

Yeah, my buddy tried that epoxy and wrap trick last year with his gelding. Horse ended up with a nasty abscess two weeks later because all that moisture got trapped under the wrap.

My buddy's mare had a bad crack like that last fall. He used a two part epoxy putty from the feed store to fill it, then wrapped the whole hoof in vetrap and duct tape for a week. Bought time until the farrier could get out.
