Appreciation post: A rainy Tuesday with my kids changed my mind about color blocking
I was trying to sketch a fall line and kept hitting a wall, everything felt too safe. Then my youngest spilled a whole thing of finger paints on a white sheet, and the way the bright orange and deep blue mixed with the green in a messy, off-center way was weirdly perfect. I snapped a picture and spent the rest of the week reworking my designs around those unexpected, asymmetrical color clashes. Has anyone else found design ideas in a total mess?

My dog chewed up a stack of old blueprints once. The torn edges and teeth marks gave me a better layout idea than anything I'd drawn clean.

That thing about the torn blueprints, my buddy had a similar moment. His kid taped a bunch of broken crayon pieces to a window, and the random color pattern gave him a whole new idea for a mural he was stuck on. Sometimes the best stuff comes from a wreck.

Happens all the time when you stop trying so hard. I've noticed that the best ideas usually come from something breaking or getting messed up, like your brain finally relaxes when it's not trying to be perfect. My wife has this thing where she'll leave a half-finished puzzle on the coffee table for days, and every time she walks past it, some weird color combo or shape catches her eye that she never would've planned out. It's like life just kinda throws these happy accidents at you when you're not looking for them, and the trick is actually paying attention instead of getting frustrated.
