Deciding between a hidden zipper or a button placket for a linen shirt

I was finishing a linen shirt design last week and got stuck on the front closure. I had to pick between a hidden side seam zipper or a traditional button placket. I went with the buttons, thinking they'd look more classic. It took me about two extra hours to get the spacing and stitching right. Has anyone else faced a similar choice on a light fabric project?

Notice how many things are getting simplified these days, like cars with fewer buttons or apps with cleaner menus. That push for a clean look is why I see more hidden zippers in stores now. They hide the working parts to make the whole thing feel less cluttered. Your choice was basically between showing the mechanics or hiding them, and that's a pretty common design fight right now.

Actually, zippers are way more modern and clean on linen. Buttons can look fussy and dated on a simple shirt. The hidden side zip would have been a cooler, more interesting choice.
