I was sketching a dress for a friend's wedding and kept adding more stuff
I mean, I had lace, beading, and three different fabrics on one sketch, and my friend just looked at it and said 'Jenny, I just want to look like me, but fancy'. That made me stop and realize I was designing a costume, not a dress for a real person. Do you ever get so caught up in the 'design' part that you forget who you're making it for?

My friend's wedding dress was the opposite. She wanted all the lace and beading, and I had to talk her down from looking like a cake topper. Sometimes the person wants the costume.

Woman down the street had her dress custom made with so many ruffles and bows she looked like a parade float on wheels. Ended up having to take a pair of scissors to it right before the ceremony because she couldn't fit through the church doorway. Sometimes you gotta wonder if these folks ever actually look at themselves in a mirror before they commit. Guess that's why being the voice of reason matters, even if it means stepping on some dreams.

Man, that's so true. It's like some people get this one chance to wear a full-on fantasy outfit and they just go for it, no matter what. The real trick is finding that line between a special dress and a straight up costume you'll cringe at later. Good on you for being the honest friend, those photos last forever.
