Talked to a seamstress in Chinatown who said I was overcomplicating my zipper installation
She showed me how she does invisible zippers with just a basting stitch and no special foot, and honestly it cut my install time in half. Has anyone else had an old-school trick totally change how you approach a basic technique?

Old timers always seem to have those little shortcuts that blow your mind. That basting stitch trick is gold because it keeps everything flat without fighting the zipper foot. I used to struggle with invisible zippers for years until a tailor showed me to just slow down and use a hand crank on tricky spots. Makes you realize we overthink stuff when the simple way works better. That seamstress saved you a lot of headache for sure.

I get what you're saying about the hand crank slowing things down, but honestly I see it differently. That basting stitch trick works fine for straight seams but falls apart fast on curves or tricky fabrics like satin where you need that special foot to keep things evenly feeding. And hand cranking every tricky spot might work for a tailor doing one piece but as someone who sews in batches I can't afford that time sink. The special foot was invented for a reason, it gives you consistent results without having to stop and redo things constantly. Sometimes the old school way is just slower, not smarter.
