Took me 5 years to realize I was draping fabric upside down
I was in a sewing workshop in Portland last month, and the instructor pointed out that the grainline on my muslin was running the wrong way. Turns out I had been cutting and draping everything backwards since fashion school, which explains all those weird pulls. Has anyone else had an embarrassing basic technique click late like this?

Took me FOREVER to figure out I was using my rotary cutter wrong, like cutting with the dull side. I wrecked so much nice fabric before someone finally showed me.

Oh MAN I did the EXACT same thing. I was literally dragging the cutter backwards thinking it would cut and wondering why it just mashed the fabric. I finally watched a video where someone said "the blade spins counterclockwise so you push AWAY from you" and it was like a lightbulb went off. Now I keep a little mat with lines on it to help me stay straight and it's been a game changer. Also I learned to change blades way more often than I thought - a dull blade will mess up your fabric every time. Once you get the motion down it feels SO natural though, like cutting butter.
