My old post hole digger finally gave up the ghost last Thursday
The handle snapped clean off on a job in Cedar Rapids, right as I hit a rock. Had to finish the last six holes with a manual clamshell, which felt like a trip back to the 80s. Anyone have a favorite brand for a replacement that can take a real beating?

Oh man, I always thought clamshells were fine until I had to dig through clay!

Yeah but see, that's where I disagree with you @eva_rivera49. Clay is the one thing that makes a clamshell actually work right. It holds its shape and gives you something solid to push against. Trying to dig in loose sand with one is a nightmare, the whole thing just caves in around you. Give me a stiff clay bank any day over that. The shell bites in and you get a clean cut.

Had to dig through clay" is the real test, isn't it? My first time trying that, I was convinced I'd broken the stupid thing. I just stood there yanking on a shell that was basically glued into the ground, looking like a complete fool. I guess I owe my old shovel an apology for all the bad things I said about it that day. What's the worst material you've ever gotten a tool stuck in?
