Why does nobody talk about using a pickle jar weight from a thrift store?

I was at a yard sale in Boise and heard a guy tell his friend he uses a clean river rock from his yard as a weight for his sauerkraut. I tried it with a rock I boiled for 10 minutes, and it worked perfectly to keep everything submerged. Has anyone else found a cheap, easy weight that isn't a fancy glass weight?

Ever try a ziploc bag full of water? My first attempt was a bit too full and I ended up with a brine water balloon.

So you're saying the bag just popped open? What kind of ziploc was it, the cheap sandwich kind or the heavy duty freezer ones? I'd guess the seal gave out before the plastic itself split.

Totally feel that, the freezer ones are usually solid but I've had the cheap sandwich bags split right down the side seam. Happened to me last week with some trail mix, made a huge mess all over my bag. It's always when you stuff them just a little too full, you know? The plastic just gives up.
