Remember when we all used those old clay bonded sand molds?
Honestly, I was still using them up until about 5 years ago at the shop in Toledo. We switched to a resin bonded system and the difference is night and day. The old clay molds would crumble on anything with a complex shape, like a pump housing, and we'd get maybe 3 good casts out of 10. The resin holds the detail so much better and our scrap rate dropped to maybe 1 in 10. It just feels like we spend less time fixing bad pours and more time making good parts now. Anyone else make that switch and see a big jump in quality?

We switched to resin bonded sand at our place and saw the same thing. The molds just hold up better for tricky shapes. It really cut down on the time we wasted fixing bad castings.

Yeah, @robinson.quinn is totally right. That resin change was a game changer for us too. The old clay stuff was just a constant fight, especially on the thin wall sections. Felt like half the job was just cleaning up flash and fixing broken molds. The resin sand just locks in and you get a clean part out. Makes the whole shop run smoother when you aren't dealing with so much scrap.
