So I finally listened to my foreman about pre-heating the ladle versus just going for it

The old 'cold ladle, hot metal' method gave me a splash that looked like a tiny volcano on the shop floor, but warming it for 15 minutes first made the pour smooth as glass. Anyone have a better trick for keeping a backup ladle hot during a long run?

Yeah, warming it up first is key... we just keep a small propane weed burner pointed at our spare ladle between pours.

Keeping a torch on it seems like overkill to me. We just set our extra ladle on the edge of the furnace between uses. The radiant heat keeps it plenty warm without needing a whole separate burner.
