Spent $800 on a 'high heat' apron that melted on my first pour. Are the expensive brands worth it or just hype?

Yeah, check the fiber content, not the logo...

What brand was it? Some of those boutique names are just fancy marketing for the same basic materials. That price tag should have bought you a real Kevlar or Nomex blend, not something that melts.

Totally get where you're coming from. Had a similar letdown with a high-end work glove that claimed to be heat resistant. The stitching basically gave up after some light welding sparks. Learned to check the actual material breakdown, not just the fancy brand name on the tag. Now I look for the specific fiber types listed, like aramid or leather, right on the product specs. That marketing talk can be really misleading.
