Vent: I thought those new ceramic foam filters were just a gimmick

Back in 2020, our shop in Dayton got a sample pack of them to try in our iron pours. I figured it was just another thing to buy that wouldn't make a real difference. We ran a test, putting them in the runner for one mold out of a batch of ten. When we broke that casting, the metal was noticeably cleaner, with way less slag inclusion. After three months of using them on all our ductile iron jobs, our scrap rate dropped by about 2%. Has anyone else made the switch and seen similar results, or did we just get lucky?

Our scrap rate dropped too, totally worth it.

Yeah, the scrap rate drop is a huge win. I wonder if it goes beyond just less waste, like @wendys36 might be onto something. Could it actually make the whole line safer? Fewer messed up parts means less chance of a jam or a worker having to reach in and fix something risky. That's a quiet benefit nobody talks about.

Wasn't there a study on that?
