The moment I stopped answering client calls after sunset
I once thought freelancers needed to be accessible at all hours to thrive. This mindset led me to respond to emails at midnight and take calls while at family dinners, believing it demonstrated DEDICATION. However, a project last year where a client expected instant revisions at 3 AM showed me the TOLL on my health and creativity. I decided to implement strict office hours and communicate them clearly to all new clients. Surprisingly, my client retention improved, and I found my output in focused periods was of HIGHER quality. Now, I firmly believe that protecting personal time is not unprofessional but ESSENTIAL for sustainable freelancing. This shift has allowed me to enjoy my profession without burning out, and I encourage others to reevaluate their availability.

Back in 2019, I knew a developer who coded from a beach in Bali. He bragged about the 'digital nomad' life but spent most days fixing bugs instead of surfing. Setting actual office hours probably would have saved his tan.

Exactly, that Bali story shows how location freedom means nothing without time freedom. You can work from a beach but still be chained to your laptop 24/7 if you don't set hard limits. The real luxury isn't working from anywhere, it's working when you choose. That developer missed the whole point by just moving his bad habits to a nicer background. Setting firm office hours is what actually gives you your life back, no matter where you're logging in from. Without that line, you're just always at work, even if the view is better.
