My kid's school project on local stone had me staring at a chunk of granite for an hour.

I finally saw the three different minerals clearly after holding it under the kitchen tap, which made the feldspar, quartz, and mica stop looking like a gray blur. Anyone have a better trick for showing newbies the basics of mineral ID?

It's not my face, it's just a tragic lack of good light bulbs. Maybe we should all just walk around with those fancy ring lights strapped to our heads.
