My kid's school project on local stone had me staring at a chunk of granite for an hour.

I finally saw the three different minerals clearly after holding it under the kitchen tap, which made the feldspar, quartz, and mica stop looking like a gray blur. Anyone have a better trick for showing newbies the basics of mineral ID?

My friend's kid finally saw the sparkle in their rock when they took it outside on a sunny day.

Honestly, that trick with the water is a perfect example of how changing the light changes everything.

Wait, so you're telling me the secret to life is just better lighting? @hannaho52 I feel like that explains a lot about my bad selfies, honestly. It's not my face, it's just a tragic lack of good light bulbs. Maybe we should all just walk around with those fancy ring lights strapped to our heads. The whole world would look way better, and we'd avoid like 90% of arguments.
