Vent: I thought the 'petrified wood' at the state park gift shop was fake
For years, I figured the polished slabs they sold near the Petrified Forest in Arizona were just dyed concrete or something. Then I went on a guided hike last month and the ranger, Lisa, showed us a fresh break in a log. Seeing the real cell structure under her hand lens, identical to the gift shop pieces, totally changed my mind. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where you realized a common tourist thing was actually the real deal?

Authenticity hides in plain sight sometimes.

Yeah, that "hides in plain sight" bit reminds me of a podcast I heard.

Oh man, my buddy had that with the "salt" from that pink lake out west. He swore it was just colored table salt from a gift shop. Then he tasted a real crystal a local gave him and his mind was blown, same exact stuff.
