Chatting up the mail carrier scored me a rare Game Boy Color.
Our mailman noticed my retro gaming t-shirt. He mentioned his son had a Pokemon Yellow edition Game Boy Color in storage. Gave it to me after I helped with a heavy package. Simple conversations can lead to great finds.

My small talk only earns me extra catalogs.

That 'extra catalogs' line hits hard because small talk often just piles on more useless stuff.

Getting a Game Boy Color from a mail carrier sounds like a lucky break, but is it really just luck? What makes some small talk lead to real links while other times it goes nowhere, like @moore.mary said about just getting extra catalogs? Maybe it's about showing real interest instead of just passing time. The mail carrier noticed a retro gaming shirt, which sparked a shared hobby, and helping with a heavy package built a bond. That effort turns small talk into something you can actually get from it. So how do we move from catalogs to connections without forcing it?
