My tenant's bistro blog post led to a free speech clash

As the property manager for a small strip mall, one of my tenants runs a cozy bistro. Last week, he posted a blog with his strong views on a local election, and now people are calling me, some threatening boycotts while others support him. Some folks think business owners should avoid politics to keep customers happy. Others believe everyone has the right to speak their mind, no matter their job. I'm caught in the middle because his success affects my rent checks. He's always been outspoken, and I hate to see him pressured to stay quiet. Where should the line be for free speech in small businesses? What do you think?

Review your lease agreement for any clauses about tenant conduct that might harm the property. If it's silent, you might need to have a tough conversation about balancing his rights with the mall's reputation. How much has the boycott talk actually affected foot traffic for the other shops?

Look for a nuisance clause in the lease, that's your best shot. Boycotts can kill foot traffic fast, so act before it gets worse.

Man, this reminds me of that coffee shop protest back in '09.
