DAE think those fancy $80 self-watering planters from Gardyn are basically just over-engineered flower pots?

I mean, my plants are thriving just fine with a $5 plastic pot and a wick made from an old t-shirt, but maybe it's just me.

Blumat stakes are a good call. I once tried to rig a watering system with vinyl flooring scraps, and let's just say my ferns were not impressed. Still cheaper than those Gardyn things though.

Vinyl flooring scraps for watering, @the_linda? That's a new level of DIY desperation I can respect. But have we considered if these homemade solutions alter the way water interacts with the soil on a chemical level? I mean, are we accidentally introducing plastics or other materials that could break down and harm the plants we're trying to help? It's fascinating how a simple stake like Blumat tries to mimic natural processes, but sometimes our clever fixes might be missing the bigger picture of what's happening underground. Why do we always assume more control is better than understanding the natural systems already in place?

Totally get that! I actually love the Blumat watering stakes for a simple, cheap upgrade.
