Vent: My compulsive nightly battery voltage checks revealed a sneaky drain

I got into the habit of noting down my solar battery levels every evening before bed, which seemed excessive at first. After a week, I spotted a consistent drop that traced back to a poorly wired USB port I'd installed. Fixing it saved my fridge from dying on a remote camping trip. Anyone have similar rituals that caught hidden issues in their setup?

My off-grid cabin in Montana taught me similar vigilance. I logged inverter output daily for a month. Noticed a steady decline every cloudy afternoon. Turns out my charge controller was overheating in direct sun. Moved it to a shaded box, efficiency jumped 15%. Now I check temps alongside voltage, catches issues earlier.

@the_taylor, what's the airflow like inside that shaded box? Passive shading helps, but without proper ventilation, you might just be creating a different heat trap. Consistent temp checks are smart, but they won't fix a design flaw if the box itself cooks the controller.

Could the box itself be trapping heat without proper ventilation?
