Warning: My backyard painting session turned into a splash zone disaster

I set up my watercolors in the yard to paint some flowers. A big wind came and knocked over my water cup onto the paper. All the wet paint mixed into a big brown puddle, and my friends saw it happen. I found out that using a wide, low container for water stops spills better. Now I use a shallow bowl, and it stays put even on windy days. What tricks do you use for painting outside?

Last summer in my garden, I had the same thing happen with a tall plastic cup. I always thought any container was fine, but seeing all my blues and greens blend into mud changed my approach. Now I use a heavy ceramic bowl, and it hasn't tipped over once, even during gusty afternoons. Your shallow bowl idea sounds smarter for portability, though.

Actually, I used to think any old cup would work for outdoor painting too. A big wind ruined one of my best sketches last year, so I get the pain. Now I'm all about that low, wide container life, it just makes sense.

I just use a frisbee with some water in it, works surprisingly well.
