Best $40 I spent this summer was on a crawl space dehumidifier

After that monsoon last August I noticed musty smell coming up from the floor vents. Bought a small dehumidifier from the hardware store on Coors and stuck it down there with a drain line running to the sump pump. Cost me about $40 plus $20 for the hose kit. Smell cleared up in like three days and my energy bill actually dropped a bit too. Anyone else deal with crawl space moisture after heavy rains?

You probably just trapped more moisture in there by sealing it up with a dehumidifier running constantly.

My buddy Derek had the exact same problem after that monsoon hit his place down in the south valley. He tried those little moisture absorber buckets first and they filled up in two days, not even making a dent. Finally broke down and did a setup like you described, cheap dehumidifier with a hose running to his sump pump. He said the difference was night and day, the smell vanished and his allergies even got better. Did you have to drill a hole in the crawl space wall for the drain line or did you find another way?
