My neighbor's $14k roof replacement advice saved my bacon last monsoon

Has anyone else ignored a well-meaning neighbor's warning about their roof or foundation here and then paid double later?

Man, that monsoon season out here is NO joke. My next door neighbor kept telling me to clean my gutters before the big storms hit, and I figured it was just him being a busybody. Three weeks later, water was backing up under the shingles and dripping right onto my bedroom ceiling. The drywall guy said the rot had been building for months and the whole corner of the roof needed to be redone. Ended up costing me about what your neighbor saved you, except I was the one paying it AND sleeping with a bucket on the floor for two weeks. Now I listen to every single thing that guy says about my house, even if he starts talking about his cousin's mail order cactus collection.
