My neighbor's old adobe quote got me thinking about how we fix things

I was helping my neighbor patch a crack in his 1940s adobe wall last weekend. He said something like, "They didn't chase perfection back then, they chased durability." That stuck with me because I've spent the last 6 months trying to get my 1985 stucco house to look flawless, when really I should just focus on keeping the weather out. Adobe and stucco both need maintenance, but the old ways of patching are a lot simpler than the modern sealants I keep buying. Has anyone else eased off trying to make an older house look new and just gone with practical repairs?

My buddy spent years fighting his old plaster ceiling, then just painted it and moved on.
