My neighbor's xeriscape advice saved my water bill but killed my lawn guy's vibe
Back in March my neighbor Carl kept telling me to rip out the back grass and go with gravel and native plants. I figured he was just cheap, but after our July bill hit 280 bucks for a 6000 square foot lot, I finally listened. We did the whole backyard in two weekends with crushed rock from that place off I-25 and some yucca and sage from the nursery on San Mateo. Now my yard looks like a weird alien landscape and my lawn guy keeps driving by with a sad face, but the August bill dropped to 90. Anyone else in the Northeast Heights made the switch and actually liked it, or should I plant some more stuff so it doesn't look so stark?

Ha, sounds like you joined the rock patrol! Honestly the stark look grows on you after a while, especially once the sage fills out and the yucca start throwing up those crazy flower stalks. Maybe toss in a few ornamental grasses or some low growing ground cover if you want to soften it up without going back to sprinkler city, that usually wins over the lawn guy too.
