Picked the $4,200 swamp cooler over central air last June, kinda regret it now
Our place up in the heights is old, 1952 build, and the ductwork was shot. Got quotes on both. Central air ran about $9,800 installed, swamp cooler was $4,200 with new pads and a bigger motor. Went with the cooler because of the price and honestly the old owners had one forever.
June through August it was fine, dry heat and all that. But this monsoon season wrecked me. House felt muggy for like three straight weeks and the cooler just pushes that damp air around. My wife keeps asking if we should've just paid up for the AC.
Curious what other folks with older homes in the valley did. Did anyone switch one way and wish they'd gone the other?
Sounds like your swamp cooler turned into a full time job this monsoon. You spent $4,200 to basically run a machine that blows wet air around your living room for three weeks straight, and your wife gets to remind you about it every single day. No bugs though, so that's a win, right? Look at it this way, at least the ductwork was already shot so nobody can blame the install. The muggy stretch is supposed to be short, but it always feels about ten years long when you are the guy who picked the cheaper one.
