PSA: my swamp cooler line was leaking into the ceiling for a month, 6 trips up the ladder to find it
Noticed a brown stain on the ceiling in the hall about a month back. Right under where the swamp cooler sits on the roof. Figured it was a quick fix so I went up there with a wrench and tightened everything I could see. Stain kept growing. Second trip I replaced the whole spider line, still leaking. Third trip I checked the pump, fine. Fourth trip I got up at 6am to watch it run and saw nothing. Fifth trip I put a tarp under the unit to catch drips, tarp stayed dry which made zero sense. Finally last Saturday I sat up there with a flashlight for an hour while it cycled and caught it. The overflow tube had a hairline crack that only dripped when the water level hit the top, which only happens during the hottest part of the day around 3pm. $14 part from the hardware store on Lomas. Took me from mid June to last weekend to figure it out. Anyone else have a leak that only shows up at one specific time of day?
Used to figure a leak was a leak and you just chase it till you find it. Then I had one on my own house that only showed up when the wind blew from the north, turned out the flashing was fine but a nail had backed out just enough to let water in sideways. Spent two weekends sealing stuff that was never the problem. Your 3pm detail is the whole ballgame, water finds the one path that only opens under a certain condition and you'll never catch it standing there at noon. That overflow tube crack makes total sense once you know when to look.
