Rented a thermal camera instead of hiring an inspector, found my missing insulation
Ngl, I always figured those home inspection guys were just upselling their gadget lists. But our power bill in Albuquerque hit $280 last January and I got curious. I rented a FLIR One from a tool library over on San Mateo for $35 and walked the house at night. That thing showed cold spots all over the attic and a whole section above the garage with zero insulation. Turns out the previous owner had stuffed plastic bags in a few bays to make it look finished. I spent a Saturday with two rolls of R-19 and a stapler, and this month's bill dropped to $173. Has anyone else caught a builder cutting corners with one of those cameras?

My neighbor's new build had the same trick in the laundry room, caught it with a $40 rental too!
