Saw a house on Menaul with 6 layers of paint on the trim and now I'm worried about mine
Went to look at a house for sale over on Menaul near Eubank last Saturday and the listing agent let us poke around. The trim around the front windows had paint so thick you could see the layers peeling back like tree rings, and I counted at least 6 coats on there. The owner just kept painting over old paint every few years instead of scraping it down. My own house was built in 1974 and I honestly have no clue how many coats are on my windows. Now I'm wondering if I should scrape mine or just keep slapping paint on like they did. Has anyone out here dealt with super thick paint buildup on old trim, and is it worth stripping it or should I just leave it alone?
Ugh, stripping old trim is the worst, I did one window on my 1950s place and it took me a whole weekend just to get down to bare wood. If it's not peeling or flaking off on its own, just keep painting over it, honestly. The buildup only really bites you when the paint starts cracking and letting water in behind it.
