That busted water heater on a Sunday in May

Two Springs ago my 12 year old water heater gave out on a Sunday morning. I was getting ready to head to church when I heard water running in the garage and found about 2 inches of water on the floor near the furnace. Called a buddy of mine who does plumbing on the side and he came over with a new 40 gallon unit for $800 cash. Took us about 4 hours to swap it out but saved probably $500 compared to calling a big company. Any of y'all kept an old water heater way past its prime like I did?

Did the water really ruin anything important though? Two inches in a garage near a furnace sounds like a minor headache, not a crisis. You could have just thrown down some towels and called a plumber Monday morning for a normal price. Sunday panic upcharges are real, but so is the option to just turn off the water and wait a day. Half the fun of homeownership is seeing how long you can ignore something before it actually breaks.

Notice how this "wait and see" mindset actually applies to most things in life, not just house stuff. We panic over things that seem urgent in the moment but really aren't a big deal if we just step back and breathe for a second. Turns out most problems shrink down to nothing when you give them a little space.

I mean, turning off the water and waiting does sound way easier said than done in that moment though.
