The solar guy from PNM made me rethink my whole roof plan

I was dead set on getting a metal roof with integrated solar panels, but the contractor from PNM who came out to my place off Rio Grande Boulevard last Friday changed my mind. He showed me a comparison of my 20-year-old asphalt shingles versus the metal setup, and the payback math just didn't work. Turns out the shingle roof plus a separate rack-mounted array saves me about $4,300 over the first 10 years, and I can replace just the shingles if hail damages them. Has anyone else gotten a second opinion on solar installation and ended up switching their approach?

Man, that’s wild because I was the opposite. I went in thinking shingles plus rack mount was the only smart way, but the solar guy actually talked me into looking at the integrated panels harder. He showed me how the metal roof can last way longer than the shingles, and with the hail we get here, I figured the extra upfront cost might balance out over like 20 years instead of 10. Ended up sticking with shingles too, but only because the payback numbers on my house were so close that it felt like a coin flip. It’s kind of annoying how much the math depends on your specific roof angle and sun exposure.
